The ACC championship didn’t get the press as many of the other games last weekend, but there were some top-notch 2012 NFL Draft prospects on display.

Andre Ellington Junior RB Clemson
Ellington had a great game. Ran hard all night ended up with 125 yards and 1 touchdown. He has the ability to run in-between the tackles but has the speed to break it outside for long gains and at 5’10 and 190lbs he is the prototypical speed back. Ellington has had some good games this year, notably the 212 yard two touchdown game against Maryland and the 165 yard game against Wofford. Next year with Boyd, Watkins and Ellington all coming back look for this high powered offense to be in contention for the BCS championship once again.

Tajh Boyd Sophomore QB Clemson
Boyd looked really good Saturday night in the high temp Clemson offense passing for 240 yards and 3 TD’s while running for one as well. He read the blitzes very well getting the ball out quickly to the outsides letting his fast WR’s make plays. He also can throw on the run, had a nice roll out where he threw the ball down field for a 53 yard TD to Sammy Watkins. He has a quick release and great weapons and I expect big things from Boyd and the Clemson offense next season.

Sammy Watkins Freshman WR Clemson
You can’t watch the Clemson offense without being in awe of the splash plays Watkins produces each week. He is a huge part of the offense running end arounds and jets sweeps for big gains. His speed allows him to get good separation and is hard to defend the quick out him and Boyd have perfected. He has real speed which DB’s have very weary of and play off him atleast 10 yards and he used that to run the double move pump and go route and beat the DB deep for a 53 yard TD. He is one of the best WR’s in college and is only a freshman look for more big plays from Watkins in the Orange Bowl against WVU.

Dwayne Allen Junior TE Clemson
Allen is regarded as one of the top TE’s in the country. His combination of good size and great hands makes him very hard to cover downfield. Allen had another big game Saturday, with 2 catches for 32 yards and two big touchdowns. The first touchdown came on a play where he broke wide open on an out route and broke two tackles and rumbled in for the touchdown. The second came in the 3rd quarter on a nice redzone catch where he ran a short out route to the right side of the endzone and the DB fell down allowing for an easy pitch and catch. Watching Allen I noticed he is a solid blocker as well, he will be drafted based on his catching skills rather than blocking but his 6’4 255lb frame will allow him to grow into a good blocker in the NFL.

Logan Thomas Sophomore QB Virginia Tech
Thomas is very raw at QB but shows great potential. He is 6’6 250lbs and very mobile. He has had a very good second half of the season taking over his team leading them to the ACC championship. On Saturday he showed good poise in the first half waiting in the pocket not forcing passes and showed good accuracy. Had a nice spiral deep ball down field for a 42 yard TD in the second quarter showed nice touch. In the second half the Clemson D line got a lot of pressure and made Thomas make quick decisions and he seemed very rushed, forcing throws into coverage and bad placement on a few balls over the middle. Thomas is young and with a good arm and the ability to make plays with his feet I see him becoming a big time QB over the next few years.

Jayron Hosley Junior CB Virginia Tech
Hosley is a very good defender, a real ball hawk coming off a great sophomore year where he had 9 interceptions he has followed up with 3 more this season with the drop off likely cause by being much less targeted. Hosley was injured in the first half with a shoulder stinger and did not return and the Clemson offense really took advantage, targeting his freshman replacement repeatedly downfield and resulted in 2 touchdowns. Hosley has everything scouts look for 5’10 172lbs good speed and the rare good hands for a defensive back plus throw in top notch tackling skills with good closing speed. Hosley might enter the draft this season I believe he would be a definite top 10 corner selected if he does so.
