Jets Positions of Need for the 2013 Draft (Part 1)

As the mid-season mark approaches the Jets have been like the stock market, up and down. The opening week offensive explosion was both unexpected and encouraging. That is until the offense mustered up only 10 points and 210 total yards versus an aging Pittsburgh defense then got shut out by the 49ers two weeks later. Then again Gang Green has lost to three good teams (Pitt, NE, 49ers) and beat three average teams (Miami, Buffalo, Colts) so a 3-3 record is appropriate. Losing the best defender on the roster and maybe the league in Revis makes the prognosis seem bleak despite being at .500.

Oh and that Tebow guy, well he’s been as lightly used and strategically deployed as Rex said he’d be. Although three fake punts for first downs isn’t exactly what the hype would suggest.

There has been some success, but still a lot of holes and questions that need to be answered. Here are some of the areas of improvement and how the 2013 draft can help fill them.

The Jets received some good news this morning, as Darrelle Revis was cleared for contact and will practice fully today, as reported by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

This is huge news for the Jets, who dearly missed their star cornerback last Sunday. More than anything, Revis’ presence will allow the Jets to focus all of their attention on C.J. Spiller, while Revis and Cromartie take care of the bona-fide duo of Brian Hartline and Davone Bess (smirks).

After nearly eight months of twiddling out thumbs, training camp has finally arrived. Of course, in true Jets fashion, there are some notable headlines that have emerged over the pas 24 hours:

  • First, the reports are true, Darrelle Revis is indeed in camp. This is his first time in Cortland since 2009.
  • Tim Tebow’s roommate is receiver Chaz Schilens. So there’s that.
  • Rex Ryan has responded to Santonio Holmes’ criticism of the two-quarterback system.
  • Safety LaRon Landry has been taken off PUP and is ready to practice. Landry’s health was a major concern when he was signed, so this is a very encouraging development.
  • Newly-acquired tackle Jeff Otah, however, failed his physical is was placed on PUP yesterday. If he does not pass a physical next week, the trade with the Panthers is considered void.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Darrelle Revis is expected to not report to training camp on time. Scheduled to make just $13.5 million over the next two years, a bargain for a player of his caliber, Revis is likely looking to be the highest-paid corner, if not defender, in the game.
