It may be early in the season, but it is never too early to start thinking about what kind of direction the Jets will need to take in next year’s draft.

So far, the jets have gotten some solid production out of positions that were supposed to be huge weakness, while some former strengths have fallen back into the “needy” category. Let’s take a look at which positions need an infusion of young talent the most:

Now that we are just a week away from the 2013 NFL draft, it is time to start finalizing what the Jets plans are, starting with their own roster. By now, all of the significant free agent signings are wrapped up, giving us a much clearer picture of what the 2013 Jets roster will look like (minus the rookies, of course).

There still is the matter of the ongoing Revis trade situation, which would certainly throw a wrench into the Jets’ draft needs. For now, we’ll go under the assumption that Revis will be on the team and update the needs list accordingly.

We knew the Jets were going to lose a handful of players to free agency, and that proved to be the case. At the same time, GM John Idzik made several under-the-radar signings on lower-tier free agents to help the Jets enter the draft with as few needs as possible.

As this (dismal) season has progressed, we now have a nearly-full grasp of what the biggest needs on the team are and their relative importance.

Of course, many of these needs are dependent on who Mike Tannenbaum decides to keep after the season (assuming these decisions are still Mr. T’s to make by the end of the season).
